How Pilates Helped Me Improve My Posture and Reclaim Movement
I was an active yogi and danced for the love of it right up until my late 30s. Then came the mortgage, a fancy new job, and a whole lot more responsibility. As I focused on my career, movement took a backseat and my body started to hurt from yoga. That’s when I discovered Fletcher Pilates, a practice that helped me improve my posture, move with awareness, and reconnect with my body in a new way.
My Body Was Speaking and I Finally Listened
On paper, my life looked great. But day-to-day? My knees hurt, my fingers were going numb, I had stubborn belly fat, and the beginnings of a dowager’s hump. Exercise and self-care started to feel optional – always bumped in favor of one more thing on the to-do list. Ugh.
A friend suggested I try Pilates and that one suggestion changed everything.
Within just 10 sessions, my knee pain started to ease. I was integrating what I learned in class into my everyday life. But what really surprised me? My legs looked longer. I actually looked taller. For someone 4’11”, that felt like gold.
One-on-One Sessions Made All the Difference
Over the next year, I committed to regular classes and 1:1 sessions with my teacher, Johanna Dalgleish at Union Pilates. Those private sessions gave me accountability, and something more: the chance to move with quality and intention, instead of just “hanging in my joints” or faking it.
Before Fletcher Pilates, I thought Pilates was just fancy sit-ups. But this method is different. It’s a moving meditation – grounded in breath, control, precision, and flow. It builds real strength while gently elongating the body.
